Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract*, Xanthan Gum**, Glycerin**, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzoic Acid, Sorbic Acid, Algin**, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid

Birch tar
Botanical names: Betula lenta L. (sweet birch); Betula pendula
Roth. (European white birch); Betula pubescens Ehrh. (synonym:
Betula alba L.) (white birch)
Family: Betulaceae
Essential oil
Source: Bark and wood, by destructive distillation
Key constituents:
Cresol* Major constituent
Guaiacol Major constituent
Creosol Undetermined
Pyrocatechol Undetermined
Xylenol Undetermined
(Guenther 1949–1952 vol 6 p. 17)
Safety summary
Hazards: Toxicity; unrectified oils may be carcinogenic.
Contraindications: Should not be taken in oral doses; unrectified
oils should not be used.
Our safety advice
Werecommend that birch tar oil is not taken in oral doses due to
the toxicity of cresol isomers (see Cresol profile, Chapter 14).
Regulatory guidelines
The IFRA Code of Practice requires that crude birch wood
pyrolysate (birch tar oil) should not be used as fragrance
ingredient. Only rectified (purified) birch tar oils may be used.
Whether used alone or used in conjunction with cade oil, the
final product may not contain more than 1 ppb of PAHs (polynuclear
aromatic hydrocarbons), which may include benzo[a]
pyrene and 1,2-benzanthracene (IFRA 2009). Cresols are prohibited
as cosmetic ingredients in Canada.
Organ-specific effects
Adverse skin reactions: Undiluted birch tar oil was irritating to
rabbits, but was not irritating to mice; tested at 2% on 25 volunteers
it was neither irritating nor sensitizing. It is non-phototoxic
(Opdyke 1973 p. 1037).
Hepatotoxicity: No information found for birch tar oil. p-Cresol
rapidly depletes hepatic intracellular glutathione in rat liver
ex vivo (Thompson et al 1994, 1996). Since birch tar oil contains
p-cresol as a major constituent, it probably has a potential
for glutathione depletion.
Systemic effects
Acute toxicity: Birch tar oil acute oral LD50 in rats >5 g/kg;
acute dermal LD50 in rabbits >2 g/kg (Opdyke 1973
p. 1037). It is probable that guaiacol is more toxic in humans
than other species (see Guaiacol profile, Chapter 14), so the
rodent LD50 for birch tar oil may be misleading. p-Cresol is toxic
when administered by the oral, dermal, subcutaneous, intravenous
or intraperitoneal routes. Exposure can cause irritation to
the eyes, nose and throat, severe eye damage, vomiting, sleeplessness
and damage to the lungs, liver, kidneys, blood, nervous
system and respiratory system. It can cause corrosion of all tissues
(Lesaffer et al 2001). The acute oral LD50 for p-cresol is
207 mg/kg in rats, and in mice is 344 mg/kg (National Toxicology
Program 2000). This suggests that rectified birch tar oil
should only contain a low concentration of p-cresol.
Carcinogenic/anticarcinogenic potential: No information
found for birch tar oil. Unrectified birch tar oils contain carcinogenic
PAH see below. Guaiacol is not a rodent carcinogen
(see Guaiacol profile, Chapter 14).
Comments
The oil is a dark, viscous liquid. Guaiacol and cresol are the
major constituents, and the oil may also contain traces of phenol.
Cade, the only other essential oil produced by destructive
(dry) distillation contains similar constituents and carcinogenic
polynuclear hydrocarbons
Io la lascerei stare vista anche la posizione in cui si trova l'estratto (molto alta).
La 2 e la 3 sono passabili, della quattro dovrei dire le stesse cose di Francesco, quindi mi astengo.
Ciao
Fabrizio
